What to Expect
On the day of your water meter installation, please be sure to clear the area where the existing meter is located. This will help to expedite the installation.
The water will be turned off for the duration of the installation. Most residential interior meters are 3/4" or 5/8" in size. A typical installation will take approximately 25 minutes.
The installer will turn the water off at the shut off valve which is located before the water meter. If the shut off valve is inoperable, the installer will attempt to shut the water off at the street. If the installer is unable to turn the water off, you will be notified of what corrective action will need to be taken before the meter can be installed.
As a homeowner, it is your responsibility to maintain the interior shut off valve. Shut off valves should be in good working order. A shut off valve provides you with the ability to turn off the water in the event of a leak.
Once the installation is complete, the installer will turn the water back on. You may experience a slight change in water pressure or sputtering. This is temporary. Run the faucet at your kitchen and bathroom sinks for a few minutes. This procedure should eliminate any air trapped in the water lines.

Frequently Asked Questions
New Jersey American Water Customers
Why does my meter need to be replaced?
The Public Board of Utilities requires New Jersey American Water periodically test their water meters to ensure that they are reading accurately. NJAW has contracted with In Line Services to change your existing water meter with a new one and deliver your existing meter to NJAW’s testing facility in Lakewood NJ.
Is there anything wrong with my water meter?
Not necessarily, a water meter like any mechanical device is subject to wear and deterioration over time. The deterioration may cause over or under registration of water consumption. NJAW is mandated by the state that they must verify the accuracy of all their water meters.
I think my water meter was just changed.
It is possible that NJAW changed your meter recently; we are provided monthly updates from NJAW. We will be happy to confirm this for you.
I think my water meter was changed a couple of years ago.
The records maintained by NJAW are very accurate. It is possible that your meter was changed recently, but it might have been changed with a meter that is still due to be tested this year (It could also be that perhaps it was your electric or gas meter that was changed).
